Metric vs. WHOOP (2026): Apple Health Platform or Dedicated Wearable?

WHOOP bundles continuous sensing with a membership; Metric builds a wider healthspan experience around Apple Health.

Choose WHOOP if you want a screenless, dedicated wearable built around continuous Strain, Recovery, Sleep, Stress, and performance coaching, and you accept an annual membership. Choose Metric if you already use Apple Health or Apple Watch and want a workout-load-based readiness view beside more health domains, nutrition, a biological-age estimate, AI, and social features. WHOOP is the focused hardware-and-membership system; Metric is the broader Apple Health-centered app.

This is also a business-model choice

WHOOP includes a dedicated sensor with an annual membership. Metric is software with optional in-app purchases and uses compatible records already flowing into Apple Health.

Where WHOOP is the stronger fit

WHOOP controls the sensor, firmware, app, scoring, and coaching loop. That integrated model is attractive for athletes who want a screenless band worn continuously and a daily workflow centered on Strain, Recovery, Sleep, and Stress. Its Journal helps relate selected behaviors to recovery, WHOOP Coach answers questions about the member’s data, and team features make shared performance tracking part of the product.

  • You want a dedicated, screenless sensor instead of using a smartwatch as the primary wearable.
  • Recovery, sleep, strain, and performance coaching are the main jobs.
  • You prefer hardware and software from one vendor and accept annual membership pricing.
  • WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging are appealing and a Peak or Life plan fits your budget.

Where Metric is the stronger fit

Metric is a better fit when you already have an Apple Watch or other HealthKit-connected sources and do not want another wearable commitment. Its readiness, strain, workout, and training-load tools sit beside heart, cardio fitness, activity, body composition, blood pressure, sleep, nutrition, and biological-age contributors. Cortex, profiles, and live workouts broaden the experience beyond performance coaching.

  • You want one dashboard across more of the Apple Health record.
  • Nutrition capture or blood-pressure and body-composition trends matter alongside training.
  • You want optional social profiles or live workouts in the same app.
  • You would rather use existing Apple hardware and choose among monthly, annual, or lifetime software offers.

Plan differences make WHOOP pricing more than one number

WHOOP’s official US support page lists annual renewal prices of $199 for One, $239 for Peak, and $359 for Life. One and Peak include WHOOP 5.0; Life includes WHOOP MG. Peak adds Healthspan features such as WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging, while Life adds plan-, hardware-, and region-specific health features. Standard monthly signup is not generally offered, although WHOOP documents monthly payments in selected renewal situations. Metric’s listing shows $8.99 monthly, annual or promotional SKUs from $29.99 to $47.99, and $249 lifetime. Pricing checked July 16, 2026 in the US. App Store, web, renewal, family, trial, promotional, tax, and regional offers can differ; confirm the price and term shown at checkout.

Apple ecosystem differences

WHOOP’s listing requires a WHOOP wearable, supports iPhone and iPad from iOS or iPadOS 17, and includes Apple Health synchronization. It does not list Apple Watch compatibility. Metric supports a native Watch app but currently requires iOS and watchOS 26. WHOOP is friendlier to an older iPhone; Metric is friendlier to someone who wants Apple Watch itself to remain the workout device.

Limitations and fair-use caveats

  • This comparison does not rank physiological accuracy or claim that either product improves health outcomes.
  • WHOOP plan features, device availability, and certain health features vary by country and eligibility.
  • WHOOP’s annual commitment may be poor value for a casual user, while Metric’s broader interface may be excessive for a performance-only user.
  • Metric depends on complete Apple Health inputs; WHOOP depends on consistent wear of its own sensor.
  • Scores from the two products are not interchangeable because their devices, inputs, baselines, and formulas differ.

Bottom line

Choose WHOOP for a tightly integrated, screenless performance and recovery system. Choose Metric when you want to keep Apple Health and Apple Watch at the center while expanding into nutrition, broader health trends, longevity estimates, AI, and social features.
